Nada

Designed and built by [D4U]

Case study

nada An app that does nothing, built like one that does everything.

Nada is a parody of productivity apps with a serious challenge inside. We took it from the idea to two native apps, a design system, a website and the stores.

The challenge

Phones are built to keep us busy. Nada had to make doing nothing feel like an achievement.

For anyone who checks the phone too often. The joke had to be funny for a second and still work after months: it measures, ranks and celebrates nothing, and inside it asks for one real thing, putting the phone down. And it had to be built with the care of a product that does everything.

What we built

Three pieces, one product.

The same product on the web, on iPhone and on Android, with one look and one voice. These are real screens of the app.

Stats screen: the time spent doing nothing, hour by hour Home screen: the button that does nothing and today's time doing nothing World screen: an estimate of how many people are doing nothing right now

Website

doesnothing.app, in English and Spanish: a working simulator of the app, a live estimate of the world doing nothing and a printable manual.

Web · HTML, CSS and JavaScript, no dependencies

iPhone

A native app with its own design system, haptics on every tap, motion sensors for the Challenge and local notifications.

iOS · Swift and SwiftUI

Android

The same app, built natively a second time with the same look, control by control. No web views.

Android · Kotlin and Jetpack Compose

What we did

From the idea to the stores.

  • Six languages
  • Store launch

Key decisions

How we built nothing.

01

It connects to nothing

No servers, no account, no analytics. Everything is calculated and kept on the phone, so it works offline and there is nothing to leak.

02

One design system, two native apps

Colors, type and spacing live in one set of design tokens that both apps read, and every control is drawn by that system. iPhone and Android look the same, down to the switches and the alerts.

03

One source for every word

Each language lives in one file that both apps share, and tests check that all six languages are complete. No screen ships half-translated.

04

A serious challenge inside the joke

The Nada Challenge uses the phone's sensors to know it stays face down, from 5 minutes to 4 hours.

In numbers

A small app, real numbers.

Have an idea like this?

We design and build the whole product: the brand, the apps, the website and the launch. Even when it does nothing.
